City City: Lisbon Country Portugal About the University A law of June 1913 authorized the Portuguese Government to create the Faculty of Social Studies and Law. In 1918, this Faculty was renamed Faculty of Law. Its 1st Director was Afonso Costa. Initially located in an old palace, it was transferred to the actual building of the University Campus in 1957-1958. In 2000, renovation and enlargement works have been concluded, allowing the Faculty to include a modern library, several research offices, three new amphitheatres, one auditorium and one room for simulation of court audiences.
With only a few dozen students at the beginning, the Faculty of Law enrolled large hundreds during the 1940s and 1950s; during the 1970s and 1980s, the number of law students would surpass 4 thousand. Besides the graduation course (1st cycle), other programmes are offered, such as post-graduate, masters (2nd cycle) and doctoral programmes (3rd cycle).

Students from the English taught LLB and LLM programme are exempt from this requirement.
There is a limited course offer in English. It is advisable to have also a Portuguese language proficiency at minimum B2 level at the moment of application and C1 before departure. An Erasmus+ grant covers part of the travel and accommodation expenses involved in studying abroad. At the moment the Erasmus+ grant has been set at € 270 - € 390 per calendar month, depending on the country of your host university. This may change per academic year.
Your application for an exchange period at one of the Faculty's partner universities also counts as your application for a grant. When you receive notification of a place for study abroad, you will also learn whether or not you have been awarded a Erasmus grant and receive more information on the Erasmus grant.
