About the University The University of Calgary is a young and vibrant campus community geared toward providing you with a memorable university experience.
Although the University of Calgary is a relatively young institution, it ranks among one of the Top Ten research universities in Canada today. In 2012, the QS World University Ranking indentified the University of Calgary as the #1 university in Canada under the age of 50 and one of the top 20 young universities internationally. The institution was founded in 1945 when the Calgary Normal School became a branch of the University of Alberta’s education faculty. Established on its current 213-hectare site in northwest Calgary in 1960, the University gained full autonomy as a degree-granting institution six years later.
